Description Wayne State University seeks applications and nominations for the position of dean of the College of Engineering. The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for academic affairs.


The College of Engineering offers degree programs in all contemporary areas of engineering and had $17.8M in total research funding in FY08. Wayne State University is a Carnegie Research Extensive University offering more than 350 academic programs through 13 schools and colleges to more than 32,000 students in metropolitan Detroit. With $253M total research expenditures in Fiscal Year 2008 and more than 11,000 graduate students, Wayne State University serves the culturally and economically diverse five million residents of the Detroit metropolitan area. The university, in partnership with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, has a key role in Michigan's University Research Corridor initiative, and is closely involved with TechTown, the area's business incubator.


The candidate must have an earned doctorate in engineering or a related field and experience or familiarity with a research university setting. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the College and have a commitment to sustaining and enhancing excellence in research, teaching and public service programs; increasing the college's national ranking; expanding multi-disciplinary programs; and successful commercialization of technology. The candidate must have a proven track record in university academic administration or technical leadership in the private-sector. The successful candidate must also provide leadership in student recruitment and retention; creative leadership for a diverse and talented faculty and staff; fundraising; economic development; working with private industry, and budget management and resource allocation. The candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to foster consensus building and proven ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders.
